A: Both thieves began the crucifixion-scene by mocking Jesus, but one of them thought better of it, and -- perhaps being aware of Jesus reputation -- changed his mind as he became more and more aware that it was his last day on earth. The repentant bandit, like his fellow-bandit, wondered aloud to Jesus, "Arent you the Messiah? Why dont you save yourself, and while youre at it, save us too."
But its funny how a stark awareness of being under the shadow of death can change ones disposition toward Jesus. The thief had no hope in the Law. He had no strength by which to save himself. He had no cavalry coming to rescue him from Calvary. He was desperate. And so he turned to Jesus, though he had mocked Him earlier. And the Lord was willing to accept him.
