Posts: 738 09/26/06 10:15:46	Tags : None This is for JDzorro. It is a list of all the ways that Paul contradicts the writers of the Gospels. Is salvation by faith alone? Paul argues that faith is the only way to go. The gospels disagree. Are the laws of the Old Testament still binding? Paul argues that they are not. Mathew and Luke suggest that they are. Can thieves go to heaven? Paul says no, the other gospels disagree. Is divorce ever permissible? Paul suggest it's okay when an unbelieving partner chooses to leave. The other gospel writers disagree. How should nonbelievers be treated? Paul says to shun them, but the other gospel writers suggest otherwise. There are of course others, but this is a good starter set. especially in regards to faith vs works. That in and of itself shows that Paul and whoever wrote the gospels were not on the same page.

Posts: 1007 10/04/06 10:04:07	Salvation is by faith alone. Jesus fulfilled the Law, so your comparisons to the old testament are not accurate. Going backwards denies the fullness of the story. It'd be like saying that it's a contradiction for the Israelites to be slaves in Egypt, and then later inheriting their promised land. Jews were held as slaves to the Law, and later inherited their promised land from their Messiah (if they accepted His Messiaship). We are talking about Paul vs. the Gospels, anyway, so these earlier scriptures shouldn't matter. The problem with your "contradictions" is that you have verses from Paul's letters in both columns. How then does Paul contradict the Gospels? If Paul writes scriptures that you interpret to mean salvation is by both faith and works, and the Gospels do the same, there is no contradiction. I thought you were intending to show that Paul was inconsistent with the Gospels, and therefore, never knew Christ. Paul is constently confusing on this matter, just as the Gospels were. Paul and the Gospels say the same thing. Christians are not under the OT Law. This is admitedly a confusing concept, but when asked what the two greatest commandments are, Jesus said to Love God above all others, and to love your neighbor as you love yourself. In fulfilling these two commandments, all others will naturally be filled also. The point of not being under the law is that rules are not necessary, when Love is true. It does not mean the the Law can be totally disregarded. It still provides a good picture of what it looks like when Love is true, and if in doubt, it is a good reference. But violating the Law does not result in damnation, unless the offender is unrepentant. The only two Gospel verses that seem to contradict Paul are Matthew 5:18-19 and Luke 16:17. Neither of these verses suggest that Christians are bound to the Law, only that the Law is still valid. The Gospels are explaining that even thought the Law is fulfilled in Christ, it doesn't mean that the Law can be disregarded. Romans 8 is a good explanation of the contrast between the Law of Moses, and the Grace of God through Jesus. Thieves can go to heaven. This one is truly ridiculous. Paul writes in his letter to the Corinthians: Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. But the very next verse is: And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. Come on! If you remain in your sinful ways you don't inherit the Kingdom of God. If you are justified in the name of Jesus, you do. So do thieves go to heaven? Yes, if they are justified. Calling this a contradiction between Paul and the Gospels is foolish. Divorce Another silly one. The Gospels say divorce is ok in the case of fornication, Paul says it is ok in the case of an unbelieving spouse. What do you suppose causes the fornication? Faith in God? Obviously not. There seems to be some big deal about when divorce is ok. The truth is that it is never ok. Both spouses are somewhat responsible, and every effort should be made to reconcile differences. Any marriage counselor will tell you the same thing. Problems arise when the are irreconcilable differences, such as an extra marital affair, or in Paul's statement, a difference in Faith. It's never ok to divorce. But if you must, let it be only in matters of great importance that cannot be reconciled. Even then, it is sinful, and requires forgiveness. Divorce is not the sin, but somewhere along the line, both spouses have wronged each other. Repent, learn from the mistakes of the past, ask for forgiveness, and through Jesus, God's Grace will grant it. Why is this so hard to understand? Treatment of unbelievers. I have a real hard time understanding how this one verse from 2 Corinthians could convince anyone that unbelievers should be shunned. It says: Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers To be unequally yoked means that the unbeliever is leading the believer. If the believer follows, he will be lead into disbelief. I would think this would be obvious. This does not contradict the Gospels in any way. Paul is not suggesting that we don't love unbelievers, or segregate ourselves from them. He is saying not to be lead by them, and if you find yourself being led away from the Gospel, then separate. Believers are lead by Jesus, no one else. The Gospels never suggest anything different. The contradictions you have listed are alleged contradictions between multiple Bible verses, of which none are truly contradictions, but certainly do not show that Paul contradicts the Gospels. Even though Paul never met the living Jesus, nor conferred with the Apostles, he preached the exact same message. Can you show any letter of Paul's where he says something wrong?

Please understand that I know you are not believers, but just consider the book as a story; it's fine by me. The Law of Moses lists 637 rules that must be followed in order to be "holy" or clean. Rules are pretty good idea on their face, and with proper understanding and intent, they can serve a valuable purpose. But it didn't take very long for some very serious problems to develop. The biggest problem is that people tend to focus too much on the laws. They read way too far into it, just like most of you do, and spend all their time bickering about what the "right" interpretation of the Law is, and whatever time is left over, that try to remember everything that they are supposed to do, and invariably end up failing. This causes a secondary reaction in people in that they develop a heirarchy of who is following the Law best. It becomes a competition and a source for argument, the winner being awarded the most prestige, and honor, and usually a seat near the front. This is exactly what happened 2000 years ago in Judaism, and exactly what happens in churches today, all over the world. This is where Christians go the most wrong, and where most bad comes from within the Christian community. In the midst of all the legal turmoil, along strolls in a commoner, no more glorious than anyone else, or so it seems, and starts talking about forgiving sins, himself. This heretical behavior instantly set the Pharisees against Jesus. Why? Because the very idea of forgiveness being so readily available threatened the stature and heirarchy of the entire nation of Israel, and who would lose most, but the ones on top? So in "fulfilling" the Law, Jesus taught how to live without it. He taught how salvation is not acheived because of works, or in other words, by following the Law. God loves you if you follow the law or not. This does not relieve you of the Law, but rather, once you understand that you are a child of God, and God will embrace you regardless of your past, and that God will always love and care for you, you will naturally want to love God back. If you cannot grasp this understanding, then you probably don't want to love God back, or maybe even doubt His existence. But this does not change the reality of God, or His love for you. Regardless, if you Love God, and you love yourself, and you love your neighbor, you will no longer need the law. The law is fulfilled, and you may now decide for yourself what the best course of action is. This is the path back into the Garden of Eden, otherwise known as the Kingdom of Heaven, where God walked frequently and talked intimately with His Son, Adam, who had no rules, but one: Love God above all else (communicated in the whole forbidden fruit thing). The Law is fulfilled because Jesus brings us closer to getting back into the Garden. Following the Law now, would be a step backwards. Instead, we need to learn how to love.

I'm only saying that rather than memorizing 637 laws, spend your time learning how to love. Stealing is not loving. And, just to be sure, you understand that by "Law" I am referring to the Law as handed down by Moses to the Israelites, not the Criminal Law Code of whatever country you happen to be living in. If everyone could love others in the way that Jesus loved others (even if it's a fictional story character), don't you think we could get rid of the laws? Of course, it only takes one pissed off atheist to ruin it for everyone, but I mean EVERYONE. And if you ever look at the laws themselves, you'll see that they all relate to a relationship. Love others, love yourself, and love God; they all fall into one or more of those categories.

If my wife buys a new XBOX game for herself do I stop loving her when I really, really want it? (After she beats me down a few times) I go buy one for myself and play it on my XBOX. I still don't see how coveting that item will affect my love for my fellow man.

Jesus never said He deserved the oil, He only said that the woman who gave it to Him was showing Love and it should not be criticized. The woman was preparing Jesus for burial, but the Apostles didn't know it yet. And He did not tell His mother to get lost. He told His disciples that they were His family. We never find out if Jesus went out to speak with His mother, or what their relationship was at that point. The message isn't 'Love' it's 'Obey or die!'

I can't believe that someone would see that those citations are attributed correctly; Steve Wells certainly jumps around a lot as a means to appropriately exhaust the person, not to inform, at least it seems that way. This example of a misrepresentation of the Bible is the main reason the SAB is nothing but a joke to me.
