Yet there are numerous genealogies in the Bible, like Jesus' in the beginning of Matthew. So in reality, the Word of God tells us to avoid...the Word of God.

"The genealogies" contradictions |

So 1 Tim.1:4 says "nor to pay attention to myths (like Noah's ark or the Tower of Babel or Sodom and Gomorrah) and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith." and Tit.3:9 says "But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless".
Yet there are numerous genealogies in the Bible, like Jesus' in the beginning of Matthew. So in reality, the Word of God tells us to avoid...the Word of God. |

Quote: That's some pretty sound advice. "I don't think we're here for anything, we're just products of evolution. You can say 'Gee, your life must be pretty bleak if you don't think there's a purpose' but I'm anticipating a good lunch." -Dr. James Watson, American biologist, (Discoverer of DNA.) |

Don't forget how the three David geneologies contradict each other.

"The individual human mind (is holy to me). In a child's power to master the multiplication table there is more sanctity than in all your shouted amens and holy-holies and hosannas. An idea is a greater monument than a cathedral and the advance of man's knowledge is a greater miracle than all the sticks turned to snakes and the parting of the waters." -Henry Drummond, character in "Inherit the Wind" http://www.godvsthebible.com/ God's Creation discredits the scriptures. |

I'm not all that troubled by the scrapping over the value of genealogies, actually. Of course, if you are disputing the idea that the bible - both OT and NT - is infallible and written by God, then this particular contradiction is an issue.
However, Titus and much of the rest of the NT was penned by Paul, who wrote prolifically as he tried to chastise, cajole and bully the rest of the christian world into adhering to his views. In other words, the comment on genealogies isn't so much an unsurmountable contradiction as it is Paul's personal opinion. The real unsurmountable contradiction is, as NobleSavage pointed out, the comparison of the actual genealogies within the OT and NT. __________________
