He apparently left the Southern Baptist Conference a while ago because they wouldn't support equal rights for women. But he hasn't gone atheist, though. He claims that religion itself isn't to blame, but that some leaders pick "a few carefully selected" verses to promote an anti-feminist agenda. He says policies discriminating against women were "in conflict with my belief - confirmed in the holy scriptures - that we are all equal in the eyes of God."
I think it's great that he's speaking out against discrimination and cruelty to women in all religions, but I don't like that he makes it sound like the Bible and other holy books aren't (also) filled with verses clearly proclaiming that women should be subjugated to men.
