Surah 11 - 69-102 - Abraham, Lot, Shuaib, and Moses

Verses 69-76 summarize Genesis 18, with a few differences. Verse 70 seems to be based on a rabbinical embellishment of the story, in which the visitors were angels (Michael, Gabriel, and another), who do not eat. In v. 71, the Quran disagrees with the Bible about the timing of Sarahs laughter. In Genesis 18, she laughs when she hears that she will have a son. Here in v. 71, though, she laughs before this news is given; she laughs right after the angels announce that they are sent against the people of Lot (i.e., Sodom & Gomorrah).

Verses 77-83 summarize Genesis 19:1-26. The Quranic summary fits the Biblical account pretty well, except for a slight question in v. 81 (does Lots wife stay behind, or does she initially go with Lot and then look back?) and the extra detail in v. 82 that stones of bakes clay, in a well-arranged manner were used to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Verse 83 says that these stones were marked from your Lord; the meaning of this is not settled, although some interprets have taken it to mean that each stone had written upon it the name of the person it was to fall upon and slay.

Verses 84-95 echo 7:85-93, and describe the Midianites rejection of Shuaib. Once again the conversation between the old-time prophet and his people bears a remarkable resemblance to the conversations between Muhammad and the Meccans. 6:135 (Muhammad speaking), for example, has the same gist as 11:93 (Shuaib speaking).

Verses 96-99 briefly mention Moses as yet another old-time prophet who was rejected by those to whom he preached (Pharaoh and his officers). Pharaoh is singled out for a particularly severe punishment, because he opposed Moses so much.

Verses 100-102 sum up the lesson to be learned from this surahs recollections of the old-time prophets: those who reject a prophet and remain polytheists will be painfully and severely destroyed by Allah.

Yours in Christ,
