The following quote from the Ryrie KJV study Bible may provide the answer you are looking for... *Quote:* the vale of Siddim. Likely the land S. of the tongue-shaped peninsula that juts out from the E. bank of the Dead Sea. It may have actually joined the western shore (near Masada) in Abraham's lifetime, causing the southern area of the Dead Sea to be dry land. Geological evidence shows a cataclysmic upheaval in that region in the time of Abraham. In other words, the "salt sea" is the Dead Sea. Could this have been a hint that the writer of Genesis (likely Moses) knew about such an upheaval? Could it have been that this so-called upheaval was related to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrha?
