I'm sure you've all heard this but the part about a star falling named "wormwood" killing people or at least ruining the water might not be that far off.
In the 1980's there was a nuclear disaster in the USSR (the Ukraine at present) when the Chernobyl Reactor melted down. Chernobyl is Russian (or Ukrainian, not sure) for Wormwood. The specificity is incredibly trippy.
A large number of people perished due to the irradiation of the land and the water supply. People who experienced the extreme radiation up close said (before their skin fell off, that is) that the intense radiation levels were marked by their skin browning with a so-called "nuclear tan" and a bitter or "sour apple" taste in their mouths.
