Q: In Matthew 26:54-56, Jesus -- or Matthew, making a narrative comment -- states that All this was done, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. What Scriptures? What prophets?

A: Matthew was probably aware that his original readers would know what prophecies he had in mind. As for us, quite removed from their setting, the quasi-parallel in Luke 22:37 helps us out considerably: Luke presents Isaiah 53:12 as a prophecy -- or, more precisely, a prominent slice of the prophecy-oracle, consisting of Isaiah 52:13-53:12 -- that is fulfilled by the apostles taking of swords. And it is the use of one of those swords that is the subject here in Matthew 26:51-54.
