Q: In Matthew 22:10, Jesus refers to both bad and good people who were gathered for a wedding-banquet. But elsewhere -- in Mark 10:18 -- Jesus says that only God is good. Isnt this a contradiction?
A: No; Jesus expected His listeners (and Matthew expected His readers) to be capable of differentiating when He was referring to good people in a relative sense, and when He was using the term good in a theological, absolute sense. I dont think that any of Jesus original listeners, nor any serious readers, encountered this statement in Matthew 22:10 and concluded that Jesus thought that there must have been some banquet-guests whose integrity and character were wholly good, of a quality equal to Gods integrity and character. A plain consideration of the context should be enough to resolve this one.
