Quote:
Thats the feeling that fueled the imprecatory Psalms: theyre written by people on occasions of danger/oppression/disaster and their authors cry, summed up, is, LORD God, protect Your people and punish the bad guys!
The punish the bad guys goes further than I would call reasonable... More like 'Hey Lord god, save our butts and wipe everyone of them out & their children too'
Shouldn't the inspired word of god be a bit beyond that level of maturity?

God's inspiration is why those psalms are in the book, so it must reflect gods viewpoint on it.
Quote:
Its not that the authors hated their enemies
But despite loving them, they still wanted them and their families slain & humiliated.
Quote:
regard divine retribution upon their enemies as a means unto an end -- an end which is not necessarily detrimental to their enemies in the long run (though it can be, if their enemies insist that it be).
- Let them be blotted out of the book of the living....
- they became as dung for the earth.
- Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children.
- Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the LORD.
Sounds detrimental to me. Especially that persecute word. Though beseeching god to turn them into fertiliser doesn't really show much 'love thy neighbour' attitude either - but i guess the writers were just prophets recording wisdom for god.
Quote:
That end is not personal revenge or hatred-ventilation.
A means to an end? So means is justified by god's book as long as it achieves the end?
Certainly it seems that gods way of treating enemies is very and needlessly brutal.

Quote:
So, its possible to honestly cry out for God to punish injustice, and still love your enemies
It also possible to call out for great green elephant to rip infants apart & honestly believing you are doing/acting good. You`re wrong but you can still be honestly deluded.
Punish is multifaceted word... I would consider genocide or mass homicide to be too extreme to be called punishment.
Certainly that on one hand god is saying turn the other cheek & love thy neighbour while also affirming its okay to make wives widows, and children homeless beggers with none to extend mercy for speaking ill sounds like a clear contradiction to me.
