All that stuff about guilds in Corinth is rather ironic, isn't it, in light of the 'patron saints' medieval guild traditions?

Yeah, the original "gesture" must have made a nice segway into later "gestures" to the myriad saints with the semblance of minor deities. Seems to me that the ritual shift was probably contrived for both jobs and for converts.
