So John was (at least technically) right. He was not Elijah. And Jesus was wrong when he said that John was "if ye will receive it" Elijah.
I agree with you, Waterrock. I can't receive it either. Jesus was just plain wrong. (But it's okay to be wrong once in a while.) Steve Wells

The "if ye will receive it" phrase could be validly paraphrased as, "If you look at it the right way." If one brings incorrect assumptions to the table -- "John the Baptist is a reincarnation of Elijah" or "John the Baptist is not the child of Zechariah and Elizabeth; he is Elijah the Tishbite who recently landed his fiery chariot in the Judean desert" -- then one will get the wrong impression from the statement that John the Baptist = Elijah. But if you bring the right assumptions to the table -- "Malachi 3:1 uses the template of Elijah's personality, role, and location to describe the forerunner of the Messiah" -- then you will get the right impression. Oh, so John the Baptist just got the wrong impression. I see. He thought that when he was asked Are you Elijah they meant Are you Elijah? But, of course, they didnt. (After all, this is the bible.) What they really meant was this: Are you the template of Elijahs personality, role, and location? Yeah, I bet thats what they meant and poor, simple John just wasnt sophisticated enough to understand. You should have been there to explain it to him. Steve Wells

When they asked, "Are you Elijah?" they probably had a literal picture in their minds; they /did/ mean exactly what they asked: "Are you Elijah?" -- defining Elijah as the prophet who had been last seen in a whirlwind and chariot of fire. "Are you Elijah?" was Question #1, and "Welcome back; where did you park the chariot?" was, pending a "Yes" to Question #1, the next question. So when John says "No," he's addressing not only their question but also the assumption underlying it (that John literally is Elisha the Tishbite). Had they asked, "Have you come in the role of the forerunner of the Messiah, conforming to Elijah's personality, role, and location then he might have answered, "Yes."
