My ex-pastor, of course, preached that the "tree" was a metaphor for a cross.

That's quite a stretch.
=================
"The individual human mind (is holy to me). In a child's power to master the multiplication table there is more sanctity than in all your shouted amens and holy-holies and hosannas. An idea is a greater monument than a cathedral and the advance of man's knowledge is a greater miracle than all the sticks turned to snakes and the parting of the waters." -Henry Drummond, character in "Inherit the Wind" http://www.godvsthebible.com/ God's Creation discredits the scriptures. |

Hmmmmmm.
Actually,the verse says they "slew and hanged on a tree". Emphasis on order of events here. First they slew him and then they hanged him on a tree. =================

Wow. I never noticed that. This whole story is so screwed up that it is impossible to know what, if anything, actually happened back then. Did someone even die? What a disaster.

I looked up the New Oxford translation. It says "killed BY hanging him on a tree."

These new translations deliberately cover up discrepancies through translating things differently than common sense and the language would indicate.
-- Crosses were just substitute trees anyway. The Romans used to plant trees along the roadsides to give shade to marching soldiers, plus it made a convenient place to crucify people on in full view of anyone travelling. Crucifixion is not, despite the claims of some christians, a uniquely Roman form of execution, either. It was practised by Persians, Seleucids and Carthaginians as well since at least the 6th century BC. -----
