My problem with this instruction is that there's no higher moral road. We're allowed and expected to go as low as our attacker.
Someone punches me, i punch him.
Someone rapes my wife, i rape his wife.
Someone kicks my child, i kick their child.
Someone blows up my church, i blow up their mosque.
This is the best a putative deity could come up with? Do back to them just as they did to you? No appeal to a more objective legal system or standardized punishments?
