prophecy does not fail - it jumps to the endtime. the "amazingly accurate" parts serve to allow those in the end time to identify the powers and
geographical areas where the antichrist and his army (of muslims) will come from. then the story continues.
the abomination of desolation spoken of here is a reference to the dome of the rock. it would be set up on a wing of the temple, in the court of the gentiles, to be downtrodden of the gentiles for 1260 prophetic days until the time of the gentiles is fulfilled. so, it was "set up" in 688 when construction began. the time of the gentiles was fulfilled in 1948 when israel was reborn as a nation (in fulfilment of many prophecies). so count them - 688 to 1948 = 1260 years. now i'd say, this falls more on the amazingly accurate side, rather than the failed miserably.
so clearly, from the above reasoning, daniel wasn't put into it's final form until around 1950.
