It's dogma. But xtians take as theological fact lots of stuff that isn't in the bible. And not just catholics, either.
The truths of religion are never so well understood as by those who have lost the power of reasoning.

A whole lot of bunk came into the "Church" about that time to appease these Roman subjects who were being forced into Christianity at that time.
