The family had to be very discrete as most of their extended families on either side of the marriage would have turned them over to the secret police for the reward if they had known the couple were Christians.
Earlier, when my parents were leaving Europe in the 1930's most of the people who helped them were Christians, specifically Lutherans and Protestants.
Jesus knew that non-Christians would betray their Christian relatives.
It was true during the part of the Roman Empire when on Emperor insisted that everybody pay homage to his image as if he were God....by taking a pinch of incense and tossing it on hot coals in front of his image. Refusal meant you went to the lions in the arena.
Most of those who went were ''betrayed" by non-believing relatives, again for a monetary reward.
(Those were the days when food was in such short supply that inside the arena loaves of bread were thrown to the audience.)
Jesus knew the unbelievers among the Christians would have a price and it would be a cheap price.
