I've been looking at recent research on the "God spot," and it has been found that actually more than one place in the brain "activates" during mystical communion. What is more, these areas are the same ones that activate during romantic or maternal love according to some reports, lending weight to Beauty4Ashes' assertion that it is just like any other relationship. Different reports say that some of the regions activated are the same, but different ones are too.

The point still holds though: it is also just like any other mystical experience in any culture.
