I remember this from when I went to church. It sounded odd to me, at least how the Pastor explained it.
The guy's father just died, but Jesus is telling him that Jesus and his teachings are more important that his father. So the guy should forget his father and follow Jesus. There was something about the father not being a christian, but instead was of the old faith {Jewish} so there was no chance of him going to heaven anyway.
So basically Let the dead bury their own dead.", meant let the Jews bury the Jews. Jews were considered dead already since they didn't believe in Jesus.
I never really liked this idea/view since it smacked of Anti Semitism.
