Quote:I didn't do a good job of explaining. By tolerating someone else's idea, I mean adhering to that idea. If my youngest says, "I'd like to eat that whole cake", I'm not going to "tolerate" the idea by agreeing with him - its a bad idea. Freedom to have and discuss ideas isn't the same as agreement with those ideas. Does that help change your "iffy" to "yes"?
Iffy. They have a right to HAVE the ideas, but if those ideas inform actions that infringe the rights of another, then they don't need to be tolerated. But then, you're intolerating their actions, not their ideas.
Free discussion of ideas is critical to understanding ourselves and our fellows. So, i'd say that ideas should be at least tolerated.
Quote:Does society include the nations of Iran, China, Sudan, etc.? If society is our basis, then does simple majority rule? If I know the U.S. public correctly, that seems a pretty fickle basis, and actually one which is often intolerant.
Society. Actions that hurt another generally are not tolerated. Speech is free, murder is bad, that sort of thing.
