I think there's a simpler answer. Jesus was a racist who saw non-Jews as dogs. However, the Jews saw that he didn't fulfill the Messianic prophecies so they weren't buying what he was selling. As a result the Christians were forced to go to the gentiles in order to keep their religion alive.
If God wanted us to be Atheists we'd be born that way.
