It's possible, maybe even likely, that the fig tree represents Rome. The tree was sacred because according to legend Romulus and Remus were suckled by a she-wolf underneath a fig tree. On the flip side I haven't found any Scripture that links Israel to fig trees except as maybe a one time metaphore.
If God wanted us to be Atheists we'd be born that way.
