A: The claim about the mustard seed that Jesus makes here in Mark is not that it is the smallest of all seeds of all kinds anywhere. The mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds on the ground. Epiphytic orchids, by definition, do not grow on the ground.
Plus, I think a call for equity is in order. Quick, name the highest mountain on earth! Did you say Mount Everest? Wrong! Its Mauna Kea, in Hawaii. Measured from its base to its height, Mauna Kea is taller than Mount Everest. Oh you scientifically ignorant person you. Wait; whats that you say? You were thinking only about mountains with unsubmerged bases? You were thinking about height in terms of altitude? Oh. Then I guess youre right. Similarly, when Jesus spoke this parable in Mark 4:31, He and His listeners did not have flower-seeds in mind; they were thinking in terms of seeds that are agriculturally useful, seeds that were sown in the ground in the land of Judea, Samaria, and Galilee in the first century.
