Here's a good example of selective emphasis/hyperliteral interpretation of scipture (hyperliteral's a new word I just made up - like it?)
By someone's definition a quiver holds 12 arrows, therefore in Psalms 127:3,4,5 where it says:
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD:
and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man;
so are children of the youth.
Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them:
they shall not be ashamed,
but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
These people have taken this verse as some sort of command by God to have 12 kids & encourage all the other christians to do the same. Feel free to use your imagination as to what the world would be like in 10 or 20 years if everyone started breeding like these human rabbits. Note, however the selectivity of their literal interpretation. They're having 12 kids because that's a quiverfull, but a literal reading of verse 4 indicates that those children ought to be treated like arrows, i.e. shot out of a giant bow at deer, targets, enemies, etc. Somehow I don't see that happening.
