So it seems that the phrase means that they were, as Burning states, set to work.<br><br>I must admit, though, that the brick-kiln phrase is troubling. The verb is `abar, which means pass through and a variety of spins on that phrase, to vanish, to perish, to emigrate, etc. <br><br>It's certainly an ambiguous phrase.
